For decades, anti-capitalists have rightly raised the question of the “redistribution of wealth” between the Global North and Global South. This idea has commonly been imagined to mean an end to the pillage of the Third World by the advanced industrialized powers, so that the people of the Global South are able to attain an equivalent level of development. This demand, put simply, means that the South should catch up to the North’s "standard of living."

But this old view is clumsy and over-simplified, since certain countries are already fully in the process of "taking their share" of the cake that is Planet Earth, and this is accelerating the destruction of the great ecological balances. The arrival of China and India as industrial, political and military powers obliges revolutionaries to rethink, from top to bottom, issues surrounding the model of development itself.

With a planetary ecological crisis on hand, it can no longer be denied that socialism will be incompatible with mass production and mass consumption. Indeed, even without returning to Malthusian catastrophe theories, we are forced to admit that the planet’s resources are not inexhaustible. These resources could provide for humanity’s needs, but only if they are used in a reasonable and rational way, i.e., in a manner directly opposed to capitalist logic, which in itself is a source of imbalance.

The strike, being organized by the Longshore Caucus of the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU), will seek to shutdown all west coast ports for a period of 8 hours on the day of May 1st 2008. Endorsements by General Union of Port Workers in Iraq, Swedish Dockworkers Union, Vermont AFL-CIO, APWU New York Metro, South Carolina AFL-CIO, South Bay AFL-CIO.

El Barrio Fights Back Against Globalized Gentrification

From London’s Grosvenor Square you can’t see East Harlem., but you can buy it. For £250 million. 47 buildings and 1,137 homes at a time. That, at least, was supposed to be the deal for UK-based investment bank Dawnay, Day Group when it reached across the ocean last March and snatched up entire blocks of this historic neighborhood of low-income immigrants—one of the last such communities left in Manhattan.

"Tunnel Rats" of Washington, D.C. work in unforgiving conditions; temperatures often exceed 160-degrees, immense chunks of concrete plummet from the ceiling, and the perilous passages are engulfed in welding fumes, pulverized asbestos, and concrete dust. The shafts are so out of control, the Capitol Police refuse to venture into them out of concern for the safety of their dogs. The fire department will not attempt an emergency rescue as there is a lack of communication system and, due to the extremely cramped conditions, access is extremely limited. But that is merely the tip of the iceberg--the Architect of the Capitol had been purposely misleading them for years about the dangerous levels of asbestos exposure in the passages.
